New seasons. New support.

When one thinks of the seasons, they think of  Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall. The seasons that dictate whether or not we wear a jacket or plant flowers.

Most of us don't realize that our lives also have seasons.

Our lives are made up of a series of seasons.

We may not have fun names for them like Spring or Summer and they may not appear on the exact same months on a calendar every year. The seasons of our lives are very tricky.

There is not a calendar for life. We don't know when our current season will change.

As human beings, we are impatient. We want things to happen now. We want what our neighbor wants. We get discouraged when we are not seeing results. Sometimes we are enjoying the season we are in, but annoying leaves start falling in our yard. Or it starts snowing.

When we become impatient, we start acting and thinking with our emotions. We take our emotions and we use them to beat ourselves up and sometimes we beat up others in the process. While we are busy beating ourselves up, we are missing the beauty of the season. In the fall, it might be getting chilly, but I sure do love the beautiful colors and I cherish every second. We do the same things with our lives.

In order to be happy with what we have and who we are, we need to come to terms with the current season of our lives. Your current season may not allow time for you to get to that home improvement project, your boss may not have the funds to give you that raise or it just may not be the right time for you to go back to school or there may be a person who just doesn't fit into your current season. As we wait for that next season, we have to adapt in our current environment - much like we must put on a coat in the winter to face the cooler weather or plant flowers in the spring when it's warm.

I think one of the hardest parts about facing a new season is realizing there may be some people in our lives who aren't experiencing the same weather you are. It's hard for us in Indiana to understand what those are going through in Florida with Hurricane Matthew as we bring in our corn and soybean harvest in the crisp, cool, gentle air.

Sometimes I struggle as a career-driven woman without kids when I am around young parents. It's hard for me to grasp what they're going through and at times I struggle finding patience. A stay at home mom is naturally going to find other stay at home moms to spend her time with because they understand each other and the similar seasons of life they are going through.

I think as farmers, we often struggle with finding others going through the same seasons we are, especially if most of our family and friends live off the farm. We tend to gravitate towards other farmers during our hard times and our struggles because we need to talk to someone that understands the risks that we take and what it's like to hold a 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th or even 7th generation legacy on their shoulders.

It's important that we find others in the same season as we are to confide in during the bad times. You need someone to share tips, tricks and in exchange you can share yours. You need someone whom with you can truly celebrate the good times and to work through the bad times.

I've been walking through a few new seasons in my life. One has lead to another. It's been exciting and hard all at the same time. It's the support, help and encouragement of those who understand my season that has provided me with the energy to keep going further. Some of those I have known my whole life and some I have met during this new season.

Helping others through their seasons is just as important as having your own mentors. We are all walking through new seasons in life. We can't stay in the same season forever and you can't fault someone or an industry for continuing to change and grow.

I think it's normal to be content with your current season. We become comfortable with the temperatures and our schedules just in time for the season to change again.

I couldn't imagine summer-like weather in Indiana all year long and I most certainly can't picture my life to stay the same for the next sixty years.

And I don't expect yours to say the same, either.

Let's adapt, grow and change with the season together.

  1. Kelly,
We all go through life seasons. Some coordinate with seasons on the farm/ranch some don't. As long as we are aware of what we are going through, we have faith and personal support, we can survive anything.

I hope all works out for the best!
